Mike Lupica writes a nice column on Donn Clendenon's value to the Mets at the time of the first baseman's death. Still, he makes a mistake by pointing out that Donn had come to the team from the Astros. It was in a trade with the Montreal Expos that the Mets acquired Clendenon.

One thing that Lupica doesn't mention is an actual deal that had sent Clendenon to Houston from Montreal before the 1969 season began. Not wanting to play for a manager who was a bigot, he refused to go to the Astros and forced his way out of the trade. This happened less than a year before Curt Flood's lawsuit and was a sign of things to come in baseball. In addition to being a World Series MVP, Donn was a trailblazer for players' rights. This is something for which he should be recognized.
