METS FANS SHARE THEIR MEMORIES OF THE JULY 15, 1973 GAME:

This was the only game my father took me to. We lived in western KY and made the 4 hour drive to Cincinnati with my best friend accompanying us. I was, and always have been, a Braves fan, but this was the only game my father ever offered to take me to, so I jumped at the chance. Being a Braves fan, I of course rooted against the division rival Reds.
Grimsley pitched well that day for the Reds. Matlack also had a good game. The Reds took a 2-0 lead into the top of the 7th and Willie Mays homered to lead off the inning. I believe that was #658 for him.
The Reds scored another run to make the score 3-1, which would be the final score of the game. But there was one more highlight for me. In the bottom of the 8th, Joe Morgan hit a flyball to deep centerfield. Mays raced back to the wall, but the ball bounced off his glove. But he managed to catch the ball with his right hand to secure the out. It was an exciting play for me.
On the way home my friend and I discussed the good fortune of seeing Mays hit the home run since his best years had definitely been before we came to know about baseball.
When the Mets won the division that year and played the Reds, I thought back to my game. I remember telling my father that the teams we saw at the game were playing for a chance to go to the WS. Not being that big of a baseball fan, too busy earning a living, he said that was nice and that was it. But I’ve never forgotten the HR or the catch.
Now it's your turn! Tell us what you remember of this game:
Please note:
We're looking for your comments about this specific
game. We've had people use this space to share their thoughts on how the
current season is going, or on ways that the Mets can improve the team.
Such comments, unless in the context of
this particular game,
will be considered off-topic and will be removed.
Example One
The Mets suck! They need to trade Smith and get somebody like
Jones.
This comment is off-topic and will be removed. It has nothing to do with
any specific game. But here's an acceptable alternative:
Example Two
The Mets suck! Smith made three errors in this game, and hit into a
double play, and the Mets blew a 5-0 lead. They need to get rid of Smith
and get somebody like Jones.
See the difference? Here you're getting the same point across, but it's in
the proper context. We wouldn't consider this message to be off-topic, and
we would let it remain.
We do appreciate anybody who takes the time to share their thoughts on our
site, and we hate to remove anybody's postings. But if we didn't take
steps to ensure that only on-topic messages were retained, The Ultimate
Mets Database would become a confusing jumble of unrelated comments,
and would thus be less enjoyable to visitors like you.
Thank you!
