The expansion Rockies' first game. I was in the upper deck as a guest of some law firm. Gooden pitched a shutout and Bobby Bonilla went deep once, maybe twice. I'm not sure. We couldn't get a program, though. They sold out two hours before gametime.

The ninth of ten consecutive Opening Days that I personally attended from 1985-1994. Dwight Gooden pitched a gem besting the immortal #1 expansion draft pick David Nied.

This was the first game in Rockies' history. Eric Young was the first batter in their history. But no one claimed the first RBI in Rockies' history that day. Later that season the Mets shut out the Marlins in their first game against Florida. In 1997, the Mets shut out the Yankees and Blue Jays in their first matchups. And in 1998 the Mets blanked Tampa Bay the first time those two teams played.

That's five teams who were shut out by the Mets the first time they played them. I'll bet no other team can top that record.

I was at this game with my then five-year-old son.

Mike, it's hard to hit a homer when your team gets shut out! Bichette's home run actually came in the next game, April 7, in the 7th inning off Bret Saberhagen.

Sat in the upper deck for this one, the first regular season game for the Rockies. They had a moment of silence for Steve Olin & Tim Crews of the Indians who had been killed in the boating accident that injured Bobby Ojeda; I think ex- Jets DE Dennis Byrd threw out the first pitch. (He was injured the previous November with a neck injury that ended his career.) I also remember that there were no programs on sale at all because they were gone, although I did request one by mail which I got a month later! And who was the starting catcher for the Rockies? Current Marlins manager Joe Geraldi.

On the this bright and sunny Rockie innaugural game day, Doc Gooden was truly outstanding. We were there early enough to get programs, as well as pendants welcoming the Rockies to the NL.

I was at the game in the Upper Reserves behind home plate, Section 2, Row M. I had gotten there early to get two programs- one to keep score and one to save. Remember a fan sitting next to me saying I wasn't going to be leaving Shea with both programs if there was a Mets no-hitter. With the Mets history, thank God that never happened as Andres Galarraga got the first Rockie hit in their history! The Rockies needed 4 more days to get their first regular season victory!

My only opening day in 55 years of watching baseball. Dwight is lights out, shut out. Went with my buddy Rick. Had a blast - except - NO ROCKIES METS FIRST GAME SCORECARDS. They "fell off the truck!" Right! Then went to NYC and watched the Whalers beat the Rangers 5-4!

Watching this game back, I caught a glimpse of the flags flying at half staff and wondered why, so thanks for clearing that up, Shickhaus Franks. And thanks for flushing flash for that great trivia, and everyone else for your memories. I watched a weird version where the game was broadcast on ESPN, but was dubbed over by the Rockies announcers and replayed for the Colorado audience that night. Duane Kuiper was a founding member of the club's broadcast team -- he's the Giants announcer who has that patented "it..is..OUTTA HERE" home run call. He broadcast for SF from 1986-92, joined Colorado for their inaugural season, then went back to SF in 1994 and has been there ever since.

They said this game was a sellout but I still saw lots of empty seats on TV. I also don't think Dennis Byrd threw out the first pitch, the broadcast I watched had former MLB commissioner Fay Vincent and NYC mayor David Dinkins do the honor, and both were greeted with a round of boos. Coleman also got booed when he struck out in his first AB, as did Bonilla when he popped out behind the plate with 2 runners on in the first. But I didn't hear much more boos as the defense looked strong (Bonilla, Kent and Orsulak all made nice plays) and Gooden had little trouble, save for loading the bases with 2 outs in the third and letting a runner advance to third with 2 outs in the ninth. Of his 8 career Opening Day starts, this was likely his best.

Bonilla hit a home run that was just fair and just barely over the fence. That followed his 2-homer performance from the previous year's Opening Day win. In his 4 Opening Day starts for the Mets from 1992-95, he hit .381 (8-for-21) with 6 RBI. He was also allegedly down 30 pounds from the previous year, and he looked quite lean and fit. Eddie Murray also stole a base, which I thought was quite rare. He'd only steal 2 bases all year, his second not coming until September 25!

Good to see the Mets pin the L on David Nied. He was the same guy who made his ML debut vs. the Mets the previous year by tossing 7 innings of 1-run ball while still with Atlanta. That was the same game Coleman decided to get into a shoving match with Jeff Torborg while on the field. The Rockies' lineup actually didn't look half bad (for an expansion team), but their pitching would be horrid, finishing the season with a 5.41 team ERA -- almost a full run worse than the second-worst team, Pittsburgh (4.77).

Overall, a nice way to start what was an otherwise crappy season.

December 30, 2022

I was at this season opener and, besides Gooden's shutout, remembered two things about it. Just four months after his horrifying injury on the football field, the Jets' Dennis Byrd was on hand with his wife Angela for a pre-game ceremony. Byrd didn't throw out the first pitch, but he was presented with a picture frame of a special Mets jersey with his name and number 90 on it.

My other memory was the crazy situation with program sales. This was the first game in Colorado Rockies history and the sports collectibles business was booming. People were buying up the game day magazines in huge bunches for the purpose of selling them as limited-edition souvenirs. I saw one guy who purchased one hundred of them and a few others who bought at least fifty or more! Meanwhile, there were many among the Shea Stadium faithful who complained about not being able to get a scorecard because there were none left. This was a case of actual baseball fans being victimized by a certain kind of corporate greed. I found it very sad.

I was at this one. It was so early in the season, and things looked promising at this juncture. Saberhagen dominated the expansion Rockies and everyone chipped in on offense. Little did Met fans know we were mere months away from golfing accidents in the clubhouse, bleach spraying, tossed firecrackers, and being shown "The Bronx."

The Rockies, who had not yet played a regular season game at batter-friendly Coors Field, came into Shea for a season-opening two game series, and managed a total of one run and six hits in 18 innings.

The Mets make easy work of the Rockies to win the first two games of the year... quite possibly the only thing that went easy for the team in 1993. Saberhagen was on point and very economical with his pitches, needing just 89 to navigate 8 innings. I found it to really be something that he only struck out 1 over his 8 innings -- the last Mets pitcher to go at least 8 innings with no more than 1 K was Bartolo Colon in 2014. Saberhagen was also toying with a no-hitter until pinch-hitter Jim Tatum singled in the 6th.

After making some really nice defensive plays in the opener, Bonilla flat out dropped a fly ball in the first inning, though the wind may have been a contributing factor. Still, he took his time getting the ball back into the infield, which allowed Dante Bichette to get all the way to the third base. Bonilla was rightly booed for the blunder, but he seemed to take it in stride when he acknowledged the crowd after they mockingly cheered for him making a routine catch later in the game. Speaking of bad defense, Tony Fernandez committed 2 errors in the game, the first multi-error game by the 4-time Gold Glover since 1988. Watching these games back, announcers fawned over this guy and were certain he'd be the reason the Mets bounced back in 1993, and they couldn't have been more wrong. Meanwhile, Bichette entered the record books as the first Rockies player to score a run and hit a homer when he connected for a no-doubter in the 7th.

During the broadcast, the crew brought up Ron Hunt's record of 50 HBPs in 1971. That just boggles my mind. For comparison's sake, Mark Canha just set the Mets record in 2022 with 28 HBPs. He was barely halfway to the record! Meanwhile, what WWOR telecast wouldn't be complete without a Kinerism. When talking about Vince Coleman, he said the outfielder took up "taekwondu" over the offseason. I guess for him that's a pretty mild gaffe, but I still got a chuckle out of it.

Recently watched this one on one of my old tapes. One of El Sid's last starts with the Mets. He didn't pitch badly at all (especially for Mile High) but gave up 3 homers in the loss on the Sunday afternoon. Earlier indicators that playing in Colorado would be such a joke for the rest of the 90's and 2000's. As the game featured 5 homers, and watching them and how they were hit, i'd say that maybe 2 of them would have been homers in other parks (Galarraga's and Burnitz's looked legitimate off the bat). The Mets lost 4-3 in one of their few trips to Mile High Stadium, before the Rockies moved into Coors.

The return of Howard Johnson to Shea, as a member of the Rockies on this holiday afternoon. HoJo had a nice game and I would assume had a great ovation from the crowd. As for the game, Eric Hillman helped put this game out of reach on this day, as after showing some real potential a year earlier on the mound, his Mets career was circling the drain as we got further into 94.

The Mets absolutely destroyed 2 future Mets pitchers in this game, as both Reynoso and Acevedo would make their way to Shea in the coming years. But neither had anything in this one, and it was one of only a slight handful of games in team history where the Mets had a 9-run lead by the 3rd inning.

This was Rey-Rey's coming out party with the bat. I remember it well - an ESPN game as I recall. The announcers were totally nonplussed that Ordonez just kept getting hit after hit.

Dave VW
July 6, 2023

I just watched this one back on YouTube, and Toasty Joe was right -- this was an ESPN broadcast on Sunday night, and Ordonez went 4-for-5 with his first career triple. He also started a 14-game hitting streak with this performance, which amazingly was the longest of his career. However, John Miller and Joe Morgan weren't "nonplussed" at all; in fact, they brought up how Ordonez had the 2nd highest batting average during winter league ball behind Roberto Alomar, and Morgan in particular commented on how he liked Rey's level swing and thought he had the makings of a really good Major League hitter. Of course, he was wrong, but at the time Rey had a lot of us fooled.

The other big story in this game was the return of Pete Harnisch, who was making his first start of the season after undergoing surgery for a torn labrum. I doubt he touched 90 mph once all night, but he still kept a stacked Rockies lineup at bay, only allowing 2 runs over 6 innings. Although I gotta say, he gave up an absolute bomb to Larry Walker in the 2nd inning. That thing might still be in orbit. But he gets a ton of credit for weathering 45-degree temperatures, intermittent flurries and the Coors Field altitude in his first start back. The odds were definitely stacked against him and he came through in a big way. His win helped prevent the Mets from getting swept in Colorado, and was only the second earned by a Mets starter to that point in the season, so it came at a really good time.

The Mets had a comeback victory well in hand, rallying for 2 runs in the 8th on a Lance Johnson triple to take a 3-2 lead. But John Franco, in all too familiar fashion, blew it in the 9th, allowing the Rockies to bring 10 batters to the plate and score 4 times. It was already his 3rd blown save, and it was only the Mets' 16th game of the season! That put him on a pace to blow 30 saves in 1996, which is quite ridiculous.

But even though he gave up 3 singles and 3 walks in the inning, I don't peg the loss entirely on ol' Johnny boy. The Mets also committed a few errors behind him, with Johnson charged with 2 when he booted Walt Weiss' RBI single, allowing Trinidad Hubbard to score, then another when his throw home was errant, allowing the runners to move up a base. Jeff Kent had another error later on that allowed the final run of the inning to score. Not to mention, Franco had just worked 2 innings the previous day, and was the only member of the bullpen to work that game. So Dallas Green probably would have been best served going with someone else to nail down the save -- especially considering it was the bottom of the Colorado order due up in the 9th, so it shouldn't have been too difficult for a well-rested pitcher to navigate.

Nonetheless, Franco's implosion negated a very strong start from Jason Isringhausen, whose only mistake over 8 innings was serving up a 2-run homer to Ellis Burks -- despite some uncharacteristic wildness, as he walked 5 and hit 2 batters. However, he also rung up 8 strikeouts, which set a new career high at the time. His counterpart, Armando Reynoso, was not to be outdone. He faced the minimum through 5 innings and only allowed 1 run on 3 hits over 7, but was mysteriously removed from the game after just 76 pitches. The Colorado bullpen immediately blew it, with Johnson arguably getting his biggest hit as a Met to that point with his 2-out, 2-run triple. It was already his 4th triple of the season, and he'd go on to collect a still team-record 21 (a mark I doubt will ever be broken).

So far, 1996 was beginning just like 1995: high hopes and promise, but nothing but poor play and disheartening losses to show for it.

A rare monday afternoon game, on the backend of a 4 game weekend series. Armando Reynoso was working on a no-hitter for the first 6 and 2/3 innings of this game, until a Jeff Reed homer in the 7th. From then, the Mets almost let this one get away, until John Olerud hit a 2 run, come from behind homer in the 9th to win. A fun one to watch,as the 97 team was in the middle of a strong month of May in what would be an unexpected, comeback season of 88 wins.

Dave VW
September 3, 2023

One of the most unsung trades of the 1990s was when the Mets stole Olerud from Toronto for Robert Person prior to the 1997 season. Though Dave Magadan, Eddie Murray and Rico Brogna had their moments, Olerud was the team's first difference-maker at 1B since Keith Hernandez, and was exactly the type of even-keeled, blue-collar player the Mets needed at the time. Every time he came to bat in a big spot, I always felt like he was going to come through, with this game perhaps being the first true example during his tenure in New York.

As Michael mentioned, Reynoso was fantastic but somehow found himself on the hook for the loss after Greg McMichael allowed Andres Galarraga to hit a 2-out, 2-run single in the top of the 8th, which put the Rockies up 3-2. Before that AB, Galarraga was 1-for-11 with 6 strikeouts vs. McMichael. Colorado turned to journeyman Jeff McCurry to get the save, but after Carl Everett flew out to CF, Edgardo Alfonzo hit a double and Olerud followed by taking McCurry's first pitch over the RF wall.

This was Reynoso's 100th career start, and first time facing his former team after being traded to the Mets for Jerry DiPoto (who also pitched in this game, fittingly giving up a pair of runs) during the offseason. Meanwhile, Colorado native John Burke made his first big-league start for the Rockies and went 5 shutout innings.

For Olerud, it was his only walk-off homer as a Met. It was also the Mets' first of 3 walk-off dingers in 1997, with Everett and Bernard Gilkey collecting the other two. The win put the Mets 3 games over .500 for the first time since May 14, 1994!

This was the first Mets game I had ever attended; at the age of nine, it was the day I officially became a Mets fan and joined the beautiful orange and blue tradition. Not that I had the slightest clue who any of the players were, but that didn't matter much at the time.

A rare noon start at Shea, this game was the last for Mark Clark and Lance Johnson, both of whom were significant contributors at the time.

Clark went the distance in this game, in an easy 12-4 win on a gorgeous, sunny day. Within 24 hours, Clark and Johnson would be traded to the Cubs for Brain McRae, Turk Wendell and Mel Rojas. A trade that was absolutely killed at the time on talk radio and in the newspapers. As it turns out, the Mets knew what they were doing (minus Rojas).

The Mets lose for the 5th time in a row as the offense continues to sputter. Darryl Kile had a no-hitter going until Luis Lopez -- making his first career start in the outfield -- singled with 1 out in the 6th inning. They managed three more hits but no runs, giving Kile his only shutout while a member of the Rockies.

With Todd Hundley still out, Bernard Gilkey joining him on the DL, and players like Butch Huskey, Carlos Baerga and Brian McRae all slumping to start the season, there was just no one to turn to for offense. Their best chance came in the 8th when John Olerud led off with a double. Baerga followed with another double, but Olerud -- an already slow runner further slowed by a sore groin muscle -- could only make it the third base. McRae struck out next, and then Matt Franco drew a walk pinch-hitting for Tim Spehr. That gave Rey Ordonez a chance with the bases loaded, but a wild swing produced a 2-foot popup that landed in front of the plate, which Kile shoveled to the catcher for one out, who then threw to first to complete the inning-ending double play. Replays showed Ordonez was clearly safe at first, but the umps weren't willing to give the Mets any breaks on this night.

Bobby Jones started for the Mets and allowed an Ellis Burks opposite-field home run just over the outstretched glove of Rich Becker two batters into the game. With the way the Mets had been scoring recently, it felt like the game was pretty much over right then and there. It was beginning to look like, at this point, the team's 88-win season in 1997 was going to be some type of aberration, and they were about to fall right back into being the lovable losers we grew accustomed to throughout the decade. The Mets were at a crossroads, and could either accept their fate and keep rebuilding and playing second fiddle to the Yankees in New York, or they can take action and make a huge move that would show the fanbase they're serious about getting back to the top of the mountain.

Thankfully, we all know which direction they chose to go.

The Mets jumped out to a 7-0 lead after 2 innings in this one, but in typical Coors Field fashion no lead was safe. Rick Reed was cruising until allowing a 2-run homer in the 4th, and he then gave up 4 more runs in the 5th, only getting bailed out when Dante Bichette was embarrassingly picked off 2nd base to end the rally. The teams traded runs in the 6th, and then Mel Rojas and John Franco managed to hold the lead despite some nervous moments to give the Mets a win in their first game of a 9-game road trip.

For Reed, he tied a career high by allowing 12 hits, and also tied a Mets record by getting a win despite allowing 7 runs. No Mets pitcher has ever won a game giving up more than that. The last to do it prior to Reed was Dwight Gooden on Opening Day in 1994, when Tuffy Rhodes hit 3 home runs off him in Chicago but the Mets still won, 12-8.

This was the first of 7 games over a 4-day period for the Mets, as they had 3 doubleheaders scheduled over that brutal span. They got off on the right foot with this win, highlighted by tying their season high with 4 home runs. All 4 were given up by Pedro Astacio, who set a Rockies record that still stands by allowing 39 HRs in 1998. Coincidentally, the Mets also hit 4 HRs against another Pedro during this season -- Pedro Martinez in a win at Boston back in June. The 4 HRs Astacio allowed also tied the most he ever surrendered in a game, and tied the most a pitcher ever gave up in a game at Shea Stadium.

One of the Mets homers was by Todd Hundley, which was his second-to-last as a member of the team. It was a classic Hundley blast, as he turned on an inside hanging slider and pounded it way beyond the RF wall. Although, he also dropped a flyball in this game for his 5th error of the season.

On the whole, despite committing 2 errors (Edgardo Alfonzo had the other one), the Mets played some of the season's best defense in this game. Lenny Harris made a great catch while slipping and falling down on the wet outfield grass, Luis Lopez made several marvelous plays at 2B spelling Carlos Baerga, and Alfonzo retired Neifi Perez on screaming line drives 3 separate times. They needed it as Al Leiter once again put tons of runners on base. Despite eclipsing 100 pitches by the 6th inning, Leiter pitched through 8 innings as Bobby V wanted to save his bullpen bullets knowing the Mets would be playing so many games over such a short period of time. Turk Wendell then held the opposition scoreless for the 17th time in his last 18 appearances, and 27th time in his last 29 appearances, to close out the game. His emergence as a dependable lockdown reliever may be the most underappreciated story of the 1998 season.

Mets were stifled by John Thomson, then a rookie, in this game, into the 7th. Piazza came off the bench, Mets were down 3-1, was booed (as was the norm back in these days) for some ungodly reason, with the bases loaded, and he slammed (and I mean SLAMMED) a 3-run 2B to give the Mets the lead. Lenny Harris hit a HR in the 8th to ice a great comeback win.

This game was the same day of my oldest sister's wedding. She married my now brother-in-law Dennis. Daryl Hamilton hit one of his few homers on the perfect day. A grand slam nonetheless. 1999 was such an awesome Mets season, and summer all together for myself. When Daryl Kile faced the Mets, I always was nervous because of his career numbers against them. He shut them down for the first four innings, and then the Mets finally got to him, highlighted by Daryl Hamilton's grand slam. Also, it was one of many good outings for Masato Yoshii that year. I went into the wedding a happy guy. That night was soooo awesome, I drank so much. I remember my grandma from my dad's side blamed my other sister and her friends for giving me the drinks! I was only a 17-year old high school junior. Dennis, the guy my sister married, is also a big Mets fan. So, he fits perfectly with my family.

This game was played on actor Bob Newhart's 70th birthday. A fitting coincidence in that two brothers named Darryl appeared midway through many episodes of his 'Newhart' television series. In the fifth inning, it was a pair of Darryls that were at the center of the game's biggest moment. Colorado's Kile threw a pitch that New York's Hamilton slugged for a grand slam to provide the margin of victory for the home team. A Mets win that had a special celebratory touch to it. Zeile, Agbayani, Ventura and Bordick went deep for the Mets this afternoon. The Mets just lit up Masato Yoshii this game. Hampton left with an injury after 3, but Wendell came in and pitched great. Even nailed a single in the 5th in a rare AB, but then he got greedy and tried to stretch it into a double. He was promptly and easily thrown out at second. He took a faceful of dirt with his slide as well. The Mets allowed the Rockies 2 runs to score when they let a Hollandsworth double kick all the way around the infield. Didn't matter. As soon as I heard that my sister and brother-in- law would be moving to Colorado and would be near Denver, I immediately planned my first visit to coincide with the Mets' visit. He knew how much I wanted to go to a game and got the tickets for us to go. Coors Field was a wonderful experience. The Rockies fans were great. The game itself was forgettable for the Mets, Mike Hampton pitching a gem and the 6-0 loss. I had bittersweet memories of the previous year when Hampton pitched the Mets into the World Series, and I'm sure any Met fan who was there felt the same (unless they were cursing Hampton for not signing with the Mets). A year or so later my sister and brother-in-law moved, and I never got back to Coors Field.

My first ever baseball game and first (and as yet) only visit to Shea. I live in Sheffield, UK and was in New York for a month after finishing University and decided to go to a game. I knew it had to be the Mets and not the flash Yankees.

I wasn't 100% certain of the rules but the Mets first inning yielded 4 runs and ended in a 5-2 victory.

A great night. I hope I can return before the move to the new stadium. I distinctly remember chants of 'Yankees suck' on my way out of the stadium.

A great night topped off with a Piazza homer...a great night.

Just when you thought the Mets bats MIGHT have actually started to wake up and the pitching settling down and going for a 4-game win streak, the Mets promptly go out and blow a 7-1 lead in the last 2 innings... unbelievable. just unbelievable. And to think they didn't even need the help of Benitez to blow this one! Can it get any worse? Oh wait, it can! The Mets go out the next day and get a couple in the top of the first and proceed to lose that one as well. When will it end?

Art, Art, Art. I know you managed in the AL, but everyone knows that a 7-run lead in Colorado is like having a 1 run lead at Shea. When you are in last place in the NL East and have the chance to put together a 4 game winning streak-YOU DO NOT DECIDE TO "GIVE THE KIDS IN THE BULLPEN SOME WORK" What is wrong with you? I went to bed that night and it was 7-0 in the 7th inning and I figured what could go wrong? When I woke up the next morning and saw the Mets lost 9-8 because of stupidity I couldn't believe it. Why didn't you leave Glavine in the game? He put some runners on base? So what? He probably would have won 7-2 or 7-4 and gotten a complete game.

I'm starting to think your winning record in Oakland was strickly because of the players you had and not because of your savvy managing skills. First you cause a Media Blitzkrieg in the locker room the other night on Piazza without talking to him beforehand (not that moving to first base was a surprise to him but you could have let him know you were going public with the idea) and now this.

Batting practice. That's what this game was. Sheer batting practice. The Mets banged out five doubles in this one. This also was the climax to a mini hot streak that began when the Mets wreaked havoc on the Giants. Perhaps it's a sign of things to come.

This was the game where Steve Trachsel should have had a no-hitter. Trachsel was pitching a gem and had a perfect game going. In the 6th inning, someone tried to bunt to break up the perfect game, but to no avail. The next guy up was the opposing pitcher, some Taiwanese guy. He hit a double over Timo's head (which he should've caught). What made me mad, was that where I was sitting there were more people cheering the pitcher than Trachsel. I was in the upper deck, which was full of Taiwanse people from Flushing (who knew nothing about baseball). In the 9th inning, someone else got on base. It was initially ruled an infield hit, but after the game changed to an error. Trachsel ended up with a complete game one hitter. It was an enjoyable afternoon game, with a Mike Piazza home run. One of my more enjoyable games at Shea for a while. You know, I don't think the Mets will ever get a no-hitter. It's kind of like Boston or Chicago winning the World Series. And now with Bob Murphy retired, I wouldn't want anyone else to call the first Mets no-hitter!

A bittersweet day for Mets fans: they sweep a doubleheader from the Rockies, however in the second game the Rockies backup catcher (Closser?) takes out poor Joe McEwing at secondbase in an attempt to breakup a double play. The slide looked dirty, as the catcher clearly overslid the bag and seemed to be aiming for Joey Mac. McEwing ended up heaped in a painful pile - suffering a broken leg and ending his season. Strangely enough, the very next inning, Braden Looper beans Closser in the leg on the first pitch of his at bat. . . and Looper is given the ol' heave-ho from the ump. . . A great game.

One errant throw was the difference between a 3-1 Mets win and what turned out to be a 4-3 loss. Why is Reyes, with two out, no one on base and the gangly Eric Byrnes at bat, doing his Nolan Ryan impersonation and gunning the ball 100mph to Woodward? I'm sorry, but the error should have gone to Jose; the throw was low and too fast to handle.

The blame, however, should not totally fall solely on Jose. Ishii should've reached down inside for something extra to get that third out. Instead, he threw fat fastballs and that contributed to the Mets' loss.

I felt bad for Woodward. Not only did he receive an error he didn't deserve, he also hit two seeds that were caught by the Rockies' shortstop. Add to the fact that I scored this game and you wind up with a pretty icky night.

A sad ending to a sad season. Willie had Piazza batting cleanup because he knew it was gonna be Mike's last game as a Met. Hey, at least he didn't strike out. Piazza batted three times and grounded out to the left side each time, then waved his hat and left the game. Throughout the game they were showing all of Piazza's highlights up on the scoreboard and it feels like it wasn't that long ago when Piazza was hitting 40 homers and 120 rbis and hitting those dramatic shots of Trevor Hoffman, Roger Clemens, and Kevin Brown. But I guess 5 years is a pretty long time. The rest of the game didn't really seem to matter, the Rockies scored twice in the first and then Jacobs and Diaz went back-to-back in the second and it felt like they had a chance, but then they lost 11-3. I guess everyone was just hoping Piazza would go out with a bang like Zeile did the year before when he ended his career with a home run, but Piazza couldn't even get the ball out of the infield.

This was the first of three consecutive Mets games I attended with my friend Mindy. She had the idea of going to an entire three-game series after the first two Mets games we saw were losers (Brewers in '04; Atlanta the next year). "They can't possibly lose three games, right?" she reasoned. Even though we got to see the Mets win a game in person against Florida that April, I thought that the idea of having three chances to win one would be moot. But she insisted on doing it and that it would be fun. Who am I to turn a lady down?

We sat in loge and, unfortunately, my "favorite" pitcher Steve Trachsel was on the mound. That piece of rotten prune danish never won whenever I saw him pitch in person... until that night.

Endy Chavez became Mindy's favorite Met thanks to a bomb of a home run. I had just finished explaining to her that with a runner on first, Chavez would lay down a bunt to put the runner in scoring position when Chavez unloaded. Some bunt.

Mindy also took an immediate dislike of the Rockies players because they all had first names that sounded like they all sang for N'Sync or some other boy band (i.e., "Cory" Sullivan; "Garret" Atkins; "Jamey" Carroll). She can boo opponents with the best of them.

One down, two to go.

This is the first game I ever went. I was 10 years old. I remember I was so excited because it was the first year I started to really pay attention to Mets baseball. I don't remember much but the one vivid memory I had was Endy Chavez pulled a home run over the right field fence. He was the last person I expected to hit one. I also believe he caught the last out leaning over the right field fence in foul territory hit by Yorvit Torrealba. I started to like Endy Chavez a lot more after this game.

I just want to say that I have never cried with so much happiness as I did tonight in the 20-year celebration. It brought back so much emotions for me from 1986 to see Lenny, Wally, El Sid, Bobby O, Timmy Teufel, Darryl, Ed Hearn, Jesse Orosco, etc. It is just a shame that the other players couldn't be there. And to top it off the Mets pull out a comeback just like the '86 club would have done. Now all that is left is for this team to make this season just as magical and memorable as 1986!

I've been going to Mets games since 1975 (I'll be 40 in December) and I've been to 4 home openers, 2 playoff games (both in '99), Tom Seaver Day in '88, 1 game vs the Bronx Evils (July 9, 1999), met "Mad Dog" Chris Russo, saw Bob Apodaca get hit in the face with a line drive, Doc's 20th win in '85, but being there on August 19th, 2006 for the '86 Celebration has to top them all!

How ironic that it rained during the ceremony since the '86 Mets got rained out at least 7 or 8 times that year.

I just wished that Doc, Davey, and Ray Knight were there; shame on you WS MVP, you can speak to a bunch of Professor Frink wannabees any night of the year even on Christmas.

Even the '06 Mets got into the spirit by wearing the '86 racing stripe home unis!

But the topping on the cake was when the PA system played the greatest novelty song ever: Jump In The Saddle's "The Curly Shuffle", an ode to the 3 Stooges before the bottom of the 6th, With the Amazins down 4-0, that great song had to jump start them because they tagged the poor Rockies for 6 runs and then added extra spice when Lastings Milledge hit a homer in the 8th and then Billy Wagner put the "Sandman" on Colorado with a 1-2-3 inning! And somewhere Bob Murphy was giving a happy recap up in the great 1050 WHN booth in the sky!

The second of the Mets/Colorado games with Mindy found us without baseball cards. Prior to the game, the Mets gave out 1986 commemorative baseball card packs to the first 25,000 people. Unfortunately, we didn't get any when we arrived.

Despite this disappointment, it was great to see the '86 Mets. Mindy liked how Darryl was "styling" in his white getup, while I thought it was cool that Rafael Santana had on a nice shirt and tie underneath his jersey.

The inning when the Mets scored six runs was the only time I lost my temper throughout the entire series. My target was Paul LoDuca, because I felt he could have easily scored from second base on the Matt Holliday error. That point was immediately rendered moot as the Mets made like the baseball conga line from one of those Bugs Bunny cartoons with a combination of hits and walks. Throughout the rally, I kept reminding Mindy how "a well-placed hit would plate (one or two runs) depending on the on-base situation. Mindy couldn't wait for me to shut up (lol)!

There is a happy recap to this game. I did get the cards for myself and Mindy courtesy of the internet. The things I do to make people happy!

Two down, one to go.

I took my two boys to their FIRST ever baseball game this night! A night that all of us will ALWAYS remember. My oldest son Thomas was 5 and my youngest Mark Jr was 4. We got to see the 86 Mets anniversary. A man jumped out of a plane with a parachute onto the field (not Michael Sergio) and they couldn't believe it!

Mark fell asleep on me before the game started and it also rained. When they walked through the tunnel to see their first MLB field I took a video of them. Then someone asked if I wanted a picture and they took a photo of us - it is one of my most wonderful memories.

Five year old Thomas carried my heavy bag to the car as I carried Mark when we left. My little man walking and talking to me about the game at just 5 years old! AWESOME!!

The final game of the series with Mindy featured the Carloses (Beltran and Delgado) going deep and El Duque wowing the crowd with his pitching, hitting (he had a single), and baserunning (he stole third).

Amid this easy Mets win, Mindy informed me that she wasn't wearing any deodorant. In the crush of 30,000 people, how the hell am I going to notice? :) Anyway, I replied "Thank you for sharing" and asked if she noticed that I was wearing the same shirt and jeans throughout the entire series (I always try to wear a light colored shirt and Levi's blue jeans whenever I see a game at Shea). I added that although I wore the same outfit three days straight, I did shower and change my underwear after every game. Always remember: A clean Mets fan is a happy Mets fan!

Following the game, Mindy and I were so spent from attending three Mets games, traveling, eating a ton of ballpark food, and the heat that we went back to our separate abodes and passed out. I can't speak for her, but I was so sick of eating ballpark that all I had to eat that Monday was an avocado sandwich.

We were fortunate that we saw the Mets sweep the Rockies. However, the next time Mindy and I see three games again, we're going to space them out a little.

What a BRUTAL loss! After Jon Niese pitches 7 strong innings, the bullpen (as always) gives the game away. Bases loaded and reliever Manny Acosta gives a early Christmas gift to ex-Met Melvin Mora for a deflating GRAND SALAMI. At that point, many of the Mets faithful leave Citi Field (As always, I stay until the conclusion) like rats deserting a sinking ship!! Then I get home and turn on SNY and I find out that K-Rod (who should have been in the game in the first place) suddenly decides to become Kimbo Slice and beats up his poor father-in-law. It really was disgraceful that MLB scheduled a Mets road trip to Minnesota and Colorado in April. The weather was about as cold as could be. I still wonder if the seeds of Jonathan Neise’s injury problems in 2013 were here when he pitched in both series.

MLB should only schedule divisional opponents in April in Colorado and Minnesota because it makes it easier to reschedule postponed games.

Unfortunately, in 2020, the Mets have an April road trip to Colorado and Chicago which is almost as bad. Let us hope deGrom does not get hurt.

This was the "Rally Parakeet" game. A parakeet the same color as Cespedes' sleeve came out on the netting behind home plate. I remember drinking a bottle of red wine alone while watching this game and being worried about the little guy.

"Attraction" was how Keith Hernandez described it, and in his next at bat, Cespedes hit his first home run as a Met, and the SNY cameras found and cut to a shot of the Rally Parakeet on his perch. It was an amazing moment. "The Rally Parakeet lives!" was Gary Cohen's classic call, maybe his best ever.

The 2015 season began with a sense of possibility (the Mets started 13-3, their best start since '86) but soon hit the skids until Cespedes got hot.

Therefore, when I think of the highlight of the 2015 regular season, I think of this game before the "Wilmer Flores game" (even though Wilmer was probably my favorite Met at that time). The way I see it, that fluorescent green bird propelled Cespedes to a hot streak that in turn led the Mets to the postseason.

After this game, Mets.com beat writer Anthony DiComo posted this on his Twitter account:

Yoenis Cespedes said he wore his yellow armband because "I knew there was a bird on the field and I wanted to look like the bird."

I looked up what happened to the Rally Parakeet after this game, and never found out, but I did learn that it was a pet female budgie named 'Tequila' who lived in Whitestone, escaped after Hurricane Sandy, and made Citi Field her home.

It was a rainy day, the Mets had recently been playing like garbage, and yet Citi Field managed to be about three-quarters full, a little more than a normal game. Mike made a very nice speech, they revealed his number up on the roof, and he rode around in a bullpen car afterward.

As soon as the festivities ended, Citi started to thin out, because nobody wanted to see this struggling mess of current Mets. I stayed for a while, but the Rockies' bats were relentless and it was clear there was no reason to be there. Left in the fifth or sixth, but at least the tickets were cheap. After this loss, the Mets are 2-6 in May after jumping out to a 14-7 start which had them 0.5 games back on April 21st. They're now 17-18 and 7 games back.

Listening to this game, I began to sense that familiar feeling of disgust for the first time this season. In addition to the onerous hospital commercials, the Mets pitched like zombies, giving up 13 runs.

35 games into the season, the staff ERA is now 4.71.

Looking for a silver lining, maybe this game will motivate the team to cut some dead weight and bring up Vientos and Mauricio from AAA in order to wake the team up. It would seem desperate if they were both batting .260, but Vientos (10 HR, 27 RBI) is batting .339 with a 1.121 OPS and Mauricio (6 HR 19 RBI is now playing second base and has a .333 BA and a .951 OPS.

Another silver lining from this game is that Mets batters went 5 for 9 with runners in scoring position. Still, that won't help when the Mets pitchers give up 13 runs as effortlessly as Dyar Miller milks a cow.

On this day, my cat Kitty passed away. She was a beautiful all-white cat with blue eyes, and looked like a Turkish Angora cat but I found her hungry and dirty on the street on January 30, 2006. That year, the Mets went to game 7 of the NLCS and it was a magical year although it ended in disappointment. I always thought of Kitty as my good luck charm since all-white cats are traditional symbols of good luck. In 2006, the vet said Kitty was about three, would have made her about 21 in August 2024.

She stayed beautiful and acted like a kitten until about her last month alive, when she started to decline very quickly. It was an emotional roller coaster for me all July with anticipatory grief, and then on August 6 the day before this game, and she had a seizure or a stroke in the backyard and I found her barely alive when I got back from the beach, gasping for breath, and I picked her up and gave her CPR, but eventually she died in my arms around midnight of August 7, and I’m in LA, so it was about 3 am in New York when she left us.

I loved Kitty so much. She was like my mom. I lost my mom when I was 9, but when I hugged Kitty, I felt that same feeling of love that I felt when I hugged my mom.

The thing is, during 1986, my mom was sick and in and out of doctor’s offices and eventually the hospital. She passed away on December 7. She was a Mets fan, so I have always have felt that in a way my mom’s illness and passing was a sacrifice for the Mets to win the World Series.

And then I lost Kitty on August 6, 2024. Kitty was a baseball cat and she watched and listened to many Mets games with me over the years. I remember being devastated, in a state of shock-grief, and a co-worker who is a big Mets fan told me that Kitty was “in a better place”. And later that day (on August 10) I texted him, “you’re right. She’s in a better place. Just like the Mets.”

Since August 7, which is the date of the first game that the Mets played with Kitty in heaven, the Mets have gone 30-19 and played with a never-give-up, magical spirit that I haven’t seen since for a sustained period since 1986.

I believe Kitty is helping the Mets, along with Grimace and many other elements including Brandon Nimmo’s grandmother and Sean Manaea’s aunt.

On September 6th 2024, the Mets won their 8th game in a row, improving their record to 77-64 , and on that day I told my housemate (a Tigers fan) that I thought the Mets were going to win the World Series because of Kitty. He laughed and said, “let’s hope it’s Mets-Tigers and it goes 7 games.”

I do believe Kitty is also behind the Tigers’ run (because they are also cats) but more so, I sincerely believe with all my broken heart that the Mets will win the 2024 World Series.

It all goes back to this game, a come-behind win against the Rockies, the first with my soulcat (and angelcat) in heaven.
