HERE IS WHAT OTHER METS FANS HAVE TO SAY:

Al triggered the tradition of "good field/no hit" Met shortstops, which (hopefully) should change if the Mets bring over Matsui, the Japanese shortstop with A-Rod- like power, only without the incentives (i.e., the infamous merchandise tent).

Despite his weak stick, Al sure looked like he knew what he was doing with the bat on his 1964 Topps card. It's pretty good.

Al works out where I do at a YMCA near Detroit. Wonderful guy, we both were friends with another special man named Tom Gibbons, a former Notre Dame football player and retired Ford exec. Tom was teaching political science at Schoolcraft CC; he died in a tragic traffic accident in December 2005.

Anyway, I just wanted to memorialize Tom somewhere where it would be appreciated, and I know Al would want to do the same. Al is probably not a well-known Detroit icon, but he should be. He still looks like he could play!

The only thing I remember about Al is a sign held up by some fan at the Polo Grounds in 1963. It read, "Our Man Al Moran."

Met Al Moran today (3-1-13). What a great guy! We talked about Casey and Hodges and then he gave me an autographed baseball card. He is now my favorite baseball player, surpassing Phil Niekro. Al Moran, He's My Man!

I didn't know Al personally but did know his younger brother Doug. I also graduated from Catholic Central in 1965. I understand he was a good coach at CCH.

Obscure shortstop, but I have one memory. Willie Mays night, 1963, Polo Grounds. On Willie's last AB, he hits a line drive bullet that ends up in Al Moran's glove. Moran is interviewed by Newsday and says that you can't a ball any harder than that.

Never knew of him as a player. Oddly enough, I have in my possession a mini bat that has his name on it. Was there a “bat night” promo for him? I’m in Wisconsin and have no idea how it came to rest in my parents house.
