jerry buchek was the first baseball player that I can remember having the same birthday as myself, may 9th. so he instantly became a met favorite of mine..

In the first Met game I ever attended, July 9, 1967 (it was also my first MLB game, just before my 6th birthday), Jerry Buchek pinch-hit for Bud Harrelson (4-for-4) in the 9th inning and homered to tie the score against the Braves. The Mets went on to win on a bases-loaded walk to Ron Swoboda later in the inning.

Buchek was a slow footed middle infielder with a little pop in the bat and versatility with the glove. Actually drilled a bunch of mid-season homers in 67 to get a little attention. Another run of the mill stopgap second baseman. Lost job in '68 to Austin native Kenny Boswell.

One of those scrappy mid 60's middle infielders like Vern Fuller, Bob Johnson, Phil Gagliano that I favored. Buchek had some range at 2b, could fill in at ss and 3b and held the NYM record for most home runs by a 2 bagger in a single season (14) for many years.

As a matter of fact, who broke it? We went to a late 67 season game and watched Tug fan 10 in a rare start vrs the Stros. Buchek raps a pair out of the yard.

So who does hold the NYM record for most HR's by a 2b?

Guessing Jeff Kent in the early 90's.

I traced the home run record for a Mets 2B in a single-season with baseball-reference.com.

Tim Teufel tied Buchek with 14 in just 97 games in 1987. I bet a couple were pinch hits.

Gregg Jefferies had 15 in 1990, but it's likely that a few of those came when he was playing 3B.

Kent had 21 in 1993; even if a couple came at 3B, he'd have established a new mark.

But Edgardo Alfonzo, with 27 in 1999 and 25 in 2000, is the current holder.

He had only 22 career HRs, but 14 came for the 1967 Mets. A lot of those came in a fairly short stretch. During that stretch, he should have had 1 more. He hit a ball that looked like it was going to hit off the batters eye in Shea. Instead, a monsoon like wind kept it in play and it was caught.
