HERE IS WHAT OTHER METS FANS HAVE TO SAY:

One day in 1971, my 6th grade English teacher silently walked to the blackboard, wrote "Pfeil" and asked if anyone could pronounce it.

My friend and fellow Met fan Bruce immediately piped up and said "Bobby Pfeil!", making sure the "P" was silent.

I'll bet most ballplayers don't realize the number of different ways they influence young kids.

I have a 1969 team picture and a few years ago I was going to autograph shows collecting signatures. Bobby Pfeil was the hardest to get because no one knew where he was. Finally they flew him in to New York and as I recall since his was one of the hardest to get his autograph cost more than some of the stars. At least he made a few bucks out of it.

Yeah, Bobby! He's always a trivia question about the '69 team because they dropped him from the roster before the Series. I remember that game-winning bunt that another fan mentioned, but he forgot to mention what also happened that day....Neil Armstrong walked on the moon!

All I remember about Boby is a friend of mine who would always call him in his best Murphy voice "Bobby P-file" and then he would laugh. That's what I think of when I think of this guy.

I was 6 years old during most of the 1969 season (I would turn 7 late that September). This was my first year ever watching baseball - and my team was the Mets. My favorite Mets player was Bobby Pfeil for no other reason that he wore the number "1" and that happened to be my favorite number!

I remember having his baseball card (Topps 1970) and I do recall that he had one plate appearance against the Mets when he was with the Phillies - and I am almost positive that it was at Shea Stadium. He wore the number 18 and they mentioned on TV that his wife's name was Elaine.

He was on Long Island not long ago for a card/autograph show near where I live. I didn't go, however, and I don't remember if I was doing something that day that precluded my attending or if I just plum forgot! I understand he is living in California nowadays. Anyhow, I hope that I can indeed get his autograph some day.

If my memory is correct, Bobby had a bunt single that drove in the winning run in a game played the day man first walked on the moon, July 1969.

Pfeil warned Seaver about Jimmy Qualls before the legendary "Almost-Perfect" Game of 1969.

I was born August 27, 1969 in San Diego California. The Miracle Mets were in San Diego that day and defeated Clay Kirby and the expansion San Diego Padres and Bobby Pfeil was in the lineup. Years later, while I was in high school, I received Micro League Baseball (one of the first true baseball simulations for computers) and it came with some of the great teams of baseball and one of those teams was the 1969 Mets. I played the Mets against all kinds of teams and got a big time kick out of it and one of my favorite players was Bobby Pfeil because he had a weird name and I discovered that he played almost every position for the 1971 Phillies, so I made sure Pfeil got in most of the games and wound up playing every position for me.

For those who are wondering where Bobby Pfeil is today, he lives in Stockton, Ca. where he has coached high school baseball and has a property management company called RPM. A true gentleman and a nice guy. Well-liked in the community.

I don't know if anyone can verify this, but I recall that in Pfeil's first game at Shea, he wore a road uniform because he had been called up on a hasty basis and they did not have an extra home one for him. As for why they left him off the post season roster, it was between him and Jack Di Lauro, and Jack was the always in demand left handed pitcher commodity while the Mets already had lefty and righty batters at 3rd base.

I think Bobby Pheil's most famous appearance was during the Amazing Mets performance on the Ed Sullivan show. After the team sang their song, he went over to Ed and did his Sullivan impression right in front of him - I believe he said "we have a really big shoe". It was great to see him at the Mets 50th celebration of the 1969 team in July 2019, but didn't catch any interview with him.
