HERE IS WHAT OTHER METS FANS HAVE TO SAY:

I thought Tom should've put up better numbers as a Met. He came off a year in which he hit 20 homers for Texas (it was either 1976 or 1977, because I remember being surprised that I saw his name in the top 10 list on the back of a home run leaders baseball card--can you imagine having 20 homers and finishing TENTH in the league?), yet he hit a mere three with the Amazin's. Then again, he played in 1978 when everything was a mess. Had management played him regularly, he may have put up relatively decent numbers.

Tom's son Ben is a good player, but I think he's wasting away in Tampa Bay. He'd be a good fit for the Amazin's, but guys like Jason Giambi would immediately put the club back in the pennant wars.

Tom is a good guy. He made some (a lot) of (Sammy, the Baines deal as examples) mistakes as GM of the Rangers but he is not alone. When Ben Grieve first came up, Tom showed alot of guts calling a game between the A's and Rangers. Ben looked as pure a hitter as Yaz or Yount as a baby. Tom's voice wavered at times but he was a true Pro. He never made me feel like he was pulling for Oakland. I have pretty much developed a complex (over time) being a Ranger fan since 7. Rating Tom as a statistition: He knows his stuff (not as much as me if I could come up with facts for a living) yet I will always pull for Tom as he seems to be a Ranger first. And that takes alot of guts to begin with!

What a lousy trade!!! The Hammer and Matlack for this guy, Montanez and Ken Henderson. What were the Mets thinking. The Hammer was better than Montanez and how could you trade Matlack for Grieve and Henderson? Tom Grieve was not around long but he didn't do anything while he was here. Definitely a bad deal for the Mets.

I have two memories of Tom Grieve but neither is as a Met. When he came up in 1970 with the Senators, he didn't do much. I remember him hitting his first major league triple and promptly getting picked off of third! The other memory is of him turning me down for an autograph after a game. My mother let us wait at the exit to the players parking lot and also where the visiting team bus waited. As a kid,I knew 95% of the players on both sides. I'll never forget Grieve being too good to give this kid his autograph. There wasn't anyone else there that even recognized him! We kids NEVER forget, Mr. Grieve.
