I met Brent for the first time during a major delay at the airport when returning from a Mets-Montreal road trip. "Bluegill" had a reputation for being a little "off-beat" and it was well-deserved. . .but he was genuine and a genuinely great guy. I, for one, was sorry to see him go and hope he's doing well back in Indiana.

Why did Brent Gaff never hook up with another team? I know he was no stud pitcher but I really liked him in 84. I thought he was a pretty good guy out of the bullpen. Just as the Mets were turning it around it 84, Brent was a reliable guy out of the bullpen and part of the winning. I think he had decent talent for what the Mets needed out of him. I'm surpised he never pitched again after that memorable season. I'm not good with remembering numbers but I always remember he wore #45.

I was also at Brent's ML debut. I was 14 years old and a friend got great tickets, box seats a few rows alongside third base. After the game we went to the Diamond Club and upon exiting the club we got to see several Mets players leaving. I remember seeing Ron Gardenhire and I remember over hearing him tell a friend or relative that he felt terrible making an error because "Brent was pitching a heckuva game."

He had a pretty decent year in 1984 and then just fell off the map. I'm not sure why he never caught on with another team after that.
