How things have changed. After being a team leader and World Series MVP Ray wanted $850,000 and the Mets wouldn't go over $800,000. So he walked over $50,000. Today they'd be arguing over $8mil or $8.5 mil. Amazing. That aside, he was a great clutch player and a great guy.

Even with all the superstars, Knight is a real symbol of the 86 team, very gutsy, and its a shame he didn't return. I also remembe him charging the mound in a flash and punching Eric Davis. However I also remembe him messing up Gooden's no-hitter in 84

Another Met I liked when I thought they were Pond Scum.I might add i'm 31 have gorwn up and no longer think of the Mets as Pond Scum.I remember when the Mets won in 1986.I was excited and yelled at the tv. I yelled Ray's name out loud and my step brother who was close to being 2 years old at the time repeated what I said LOL.I wonder if Sean remembers that.

Amazin'. He went from .218 hitter one year to World Series MVP the next.

Ray Knight was a real gamer. He struggled intially with the Mets but once Davey Johnson gave him more playing time he became very productive. I recall his bad throw in Game 6 of the 86 Series against the Red Sox allowed them to tie the game. Of course he rebounded with a key hit in the bottom of the tenth inning and scored the winning run. His homer off Calvin Schraldi in Game Seven gave the Mets the lead they never relinquished. I met him when he worked for ESPN a truly gracious and nice person.

This is an odd memory but every time I hear Blister in the Sun by the Violent Femmes I think of Ray. I was in college and a bunch of us had gotten a beach house over the summer and were partying pretty hard. That song came on just as Eric Davis slid into third (the TV sound was down) and Ray Ray decked him. It seemed to have been coreographed perfectly. I was toasted and the whole thing seemed so cool. I don't remember a hell of a lot from that night but the fight stands out.

Ray's name came up in the search to replace Bobby V. So now I think he should be considered again to be the Mets' skipper. Sure he gets annoying by thanking the good Lord every other sentence, but he also doesn't take any crap from anyone.

I loved it when they got him! His attitude fit in well with the Mets players and fans! I was at Shea 9/7/84 against the Cubs. That little roller by Keith Moreland should have been an error!! Years later, I still see him nailing Eric Davis and starting the brawl at Cincinnati! He gets tossed, Carter moves to 3rd base, starts a double play. Orosco and McDowell take turns pitching and playing in the outfield. Unbelievable!! 1986, What a season

I have really enjoyed watching Ray play for several teams in the pros. But my favorite memory is from High School in Albany, GA at Dougherty High. He was two years ahead of me and WAS our baseball team. He was always a really nice guy, but very intense, especially about sports. I was lucky enough to play in two games with him in my sophomore year. And, of course, as soon as he graduated our baseball team pretty much dried up and went away. Hope he gets to manage again and remain a valuable asset to professional baseball.

I would have thought there'd be more memories for the 1986 World Series MVP. I rooted for him as a member of the Tom Seaver Reds as well as the Mets. Knight had a tough act to follow as successor to Pete Rose at 3B. All he did was bat .318 and play great defense as the 1979 Reds won the division. Seven years later, there he was at the center of the biggest miracle in baseball history.

Although he was not a great player, Ray Knight was a great clutch player. If you needed a hit with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Ray Knight was the guy you wanted at the plate. The game I most remember was July 4, 1986 at Shea Stadium against the Astros. He struck out 4 times and he was the last batter in the bottom of the ninth with two outs. He hit a home run to win the game and he waved to his wife Nancy as headed for the dugout.

The Mets not resigning him was a mistake. He was part of the heart and soul of the championship 1986 team. They got cheap after he helped win it all, a mistake. It's no wonder why they didn't win it all again after breaking up a championship team by letting him and Kevin Mitchell walk.
