HERE IS WHAT OTHER METS FANS HAVE TO SAY:

I was disappointed when I saw the Diamondbacks claim Cory as the first Met in the expansion draft back in '97. He had a very solid year for them and appeared as though he had a future with them as a set up man. However, I was even more disappointed when I learned that he never got the opportunity to pitch for the D-backs due to injury. I thought that he had dropped out of baseball but was pleasantly surprised to see him make a quality start for the Devil Rays last month. He has struggled somewhat since then, but I hope he is able to put it together.

Cory Lidle happens to be the best Mets pitcher in 2001. Too bad he is pitching for the A's. Another bone headed move by the wife cheating sex addict Steve Phillips.

Supposedly the Mets protected Greg McMichael, but not Lidle. Like anybody would take McMichael, even forgetting that he had a decent salary, and the expansion teams took mostly guys making no money.

Lidle provided a shot in the arm to the 1997 team. His two losses were memorable.

One day, with the threat of rain hanging over the Mets- Reds game, Valentine decided to start Lidle instead of Mark Clark, assuming the game would be washed anyway. Lidle struggled, the rain threat abated, and later Clark came in to pitch some ineffective relief, and Lidle was tagged with the loss.

The second loss, at home vs. the Pirates, came the night we were eliminated from wild card competiton, a week before the end of the season. I don't remember whether the Marlins win or the Mets loss that night came first, but either one was enough to cinch it for the eventual World Champion Marlins.

Tragedy today - the loss of a great both on and off the field. Thoughts and prayers for the family - his beautiful wife and son and for the fellow fans shocked by todays events. God bless Cory, rest peacefully.

When I first heard that Cory Lidle was involved in that plane crash, I thought it was some kind of sick joke by some Yankee hater that tied in to the Bronx team's loss to Detroit. Unfortunately, it was not the case. Not only is it a very sad event, it also was surreal. It was only two days prior to the incident that Lidle tried to defend himself in an interview with WFAN's Mike Francesa and Chris Russo concerning newspaper remarks Cory made about the Yankees' effort against the Tigers... and now he's gone. Sad.

Although I don't have a specific memory of Cory, I do remember that he wore number 11, which to me at the time was an odd number for a pitcher to wear (I always think of Wayne Garrett when it comes to double-ones). I also liked his versatility—he could start, come in for long relief, or handle a save opportunity. I also recall getting mad when he and another prospect that I thought was going to do something in the bigs (Carlos Mendoza) were selected in the 'zona/D-Ray expansion draft after the '97 season.

Thanks to role players like Cory, the Mets' '97 season was that much more enjoyable.

When I heard the news of the plane crash- I immediately thought of him as a Met and not a Yankee. He had a nice season for the Mets in 1997- going 7-2 with a 3.53 ERA. Even more importantly he was a nice man from what I have heard about him personally and a good father to his 6 year old son Christopher.
