They didn't give him much of a chance. He had potential, it's a shame we didn't see more of him. Decent power.

I had the great pleasure of meeting Mark Johnson in August of this year in Houston, and then again in September in Atlanta. Mark was a really great guy. In Houston, he took time out very late at night (though he was very obviously tired and ready for some r&r) to stop and sign autographs, take pictures and just chat in general. Then he went out of his way to come over to speak to us at the wall the next afternoon at batting practice. We thought that he was very sweet to do that, but we never expected that he would remember us in Atlanta almost a month and a half later. However, there we were at batting practice at the Ted, and Mark came over and spoke to us, signed more autographs, took more pictures, and reminded us of an incident with my sister, Stacey in an elevator. All in all, Mark Johnson is a really nice person.

Mark Johnson is a Matt Franco clone with a little more power. What else is there to say?

A mistake hitter. He's got a lot of holes you can pitch to. I don't think the Matt Franco comparison is all that relevant because Franco makes much more frequent solid contact.

Mark always seems to have a decent spring training, but once the season starts he strikes out constantly. He can't hit the side of a barn for some reason, probably because the pitchers in spring training aren't the real deal and once the real games start he just isn't real major league material.

Johnson is one of those guys who blew too many opportunities when he was younger, as a Pirate, and would never be put into consideration for serious playing time, despite his minor league success.

Maybe he was a guy who needed regular playing time to succeed, and he just couldn't show his skill with inconsistent playing time. We'll never know.

He had a few big hits in the lost season of 2001, and was the first man thrown off the ship in the 2002 debacle, trading places at Norfolk with "Smokey" Tony Tarasco.

He went 3-for-12 (.250) in 2000 and 11-for-27 (.407) in 2001 as a pinch hitter, then they dumped him after a 4-for-19 (.211) stretch in 2002 for Tony Tarasco. He also hit a couple of pinch homers for the Mets in his career. What really plagued him was when he had to play every day. He was a good pinch hitter and seemed to always rip the ball at least once a game in his spot starts. But in 2002 when Mo Vaughn broke his pinkie finger Johnson had to fill in for him and that was pretty much it for him. I think he went 3-for-23 in his spot starts for Vaughn. Tarasco's numbers were a lot prettier by the end of the season but I would have stuck with Johnson. I think his pinch hitting would have come around and I doubt he would have embarrassed the organization with a drug scandal.
