HERE IS WHAT OTHER METS FANS HAVE TO SAY:

Strangely, Gerald receives alot of unkind press as his career winds down. Odd for many reasons. He's a legitimate five tool player. Power, speed, HAS hit for average, good arm, runs anything down in the outfield. Put up good numbers from 1995-2000 as a starter/occasional starter in NY (Yankees), Milwaukee, Atlanta and Tampa. He was the D-Rays MVP in 2000. Always respectful and shy in public, he's apparently been a very popular teammate everywhere he's been, majors AND minors. Derek Jeter has often commented about Gerald's guidance when the Yankee ss first came up. I will ALWAYS root for this guy.

I agree with Mr. Friedson's assessment. Some career highlights - DRays MVP in 2000 as stated. Saved Doc Gooden's Yankee no hitter with spectacular catch in CF. Had six hits in a game in 1996. Total team player and seems like a perfect gentleman. Hope he lands a job in 2005. I think the Mets just dropped him from their ML roster.

Never was any good except for a year or two in Tampa, for some reason he was given playing time over Valent while Diaz was stuck in the minors. Gerald was beyond awful last year why he was brought back I'll never know. The funny thing about him is the Mets beat writers report that he had the biggest ego on last year's team which is pretty funny.

In his prime he was a very solid player: speed, great defense, good attitude, and could hit for power. I just think he wasn't suited for a part-time hitting role and as a result his average suffered. Being able to hit in a pinch or one or two times per game is more difficult than it seems. In any event, I'm happy he wound up his career with the Mets. A likeable player.
