I played minor league baseball with John in 1965.
I first met him when he was with the Phillies organization playing for the Bakersfield Bears. I had been released by the Tiger organization and had signed with the Phillies and was assigned to Bakersfield.
John had an unbelievable body and looked like a weight lifter or workout fanatic. He had almost 0 fat on him.
However, the first night I was in Bakersfield, John and I went to dinner together. He ordered 3 donuts, 3 orders of fries and a coke!! That was dinner. He ate junk food like it was his last meal and never showed any signs of weight gain.

I knew John when we played together in High school and American Legion baseball in Monroe Michigan but before that, I first saw this little barrel chested, barefoot with no shirt and no glove at Cairns Field. My father was hitting balls to my brother and I and he came running up to ask to play. He was about 10 and I was about 13. We let him use our glove and that started a long youth friendship.
