Robson was up and down so often during his stint here. Majors to minors back to majors back to minors. It was difficult to keep track of him. Bobby V. thought well of him, so he was a face of the Mets' most successful era since 1986.

I was a minor league player in the Mets farm system in 1968, hoping to catch on with either the Raleigh team or the Visalia team. I saw Tom Robson hit a ball on a line from home plate to near the top of the tall, wooden, green fence in center field, some fifteen or twenty feet above the "420 Ft" sign. The ball was hit so hard, it actually put a hole in the fence. I thought, man, that guy's going to make it.
I was very surprised that Tom Robson only got to play a handful of games in the major leagues. I followed his career from time to time. I do not recall the numbers, but it seemed like he'd hit thirty or forty home runs wherever he played -- at Visalia or Raleigh or maybe Memphis, the Mets double A farm club at the time. Maybe he got injured or there were circumstances of which I know nothing about, but it sure seemed like if there was ever a guy who would ever be great in the majors, Tom Robson was it.
I did manage to make the summer league team, the Marion Mets, in 1968, and played with Tim Foli and John Milner on that team. They were good, of course, and enjoyed good careers. But I sure thought very highly of Tom Robson.
I recently was in a bookstore, and a book on hitting by Tom Robson caught my eye. Of course, I had to buy it. I haven't had a chance to read it yet. All I know is, Tom Robson could hit. He sure made an impression on me. He seemed like a nice guy, too, although I didn't get to know him that well.
