I had not known until I saw him listed on the birthdays page that Eddie Stanky was ever affiliated with the Mets. He came over along with Bing Devine from the Cardinals. There was talk late in the 1965 season that he might become Mets manager, but instead the team removed the interim tag from Wes Westrum. In December 1965, Stanky took the managing job with the White Sox, and Bob Scheffing succeeded him as director of player development.

In one of my books on 1969, Eddie Stanky is mentioned as having a big impact on both Al Weis and Tommie Agee during their pre-Mets stints with the White Sox. Weis admired Stanky's no-nonsense approach to the game. Stanky would periodically quiz Weis, a frequent bench player, about the action on the field, just to see if Weis was paying attention. Agee, on the other hand, found Stanky too demanding and the big centerfielder did not perform well under him. Both were soon sent to Shea in one of the Mets' few great trades.
I did not know until today that Stanky had been affiliated with the Mets.
